Would you expect that in most places in Washington a finish carpenter would need to pass a drug test (including marijuana) to be hired?

Yes I would. If you are being employed by a company and you are not a self-employed sub-contractor, you would likely have to pass a drug test (including marijuana). You are using air nailers, saws, etc... that can cause bodily injury. Your employer has insurance guidelines for his business...one of those is almost certainly that his employees are drug free so as not to be a liability.

Unless its a big company you shouldn't have to worry. Ive worked construction in oregon/washington for the last 5 years and have never been drug tested. They have all been relatively small companies though. 10-20 employees.

Construction companies do not drug test around this neck of the woods.
