Is Custer in Whatcom Co. an "unpopular spot?" Is this an area that lacks in services / how is the crime rate there? I notice that Custer is an area where there is more acreage than homes and more rural.
Actually, Custer is one of my favorite spots in Washington. It is very rural and has some issues with flooding. There isn't really much there. I had heard that it was one of the areas that the meth heads prefer because it is so far out there, but I don't know if that's true.
Beautiful in the spring and summer!

From looking at the aerial and satellite maps of Custer it looks very rural with a slower pace of life which is just what I'm looking for. No traffic, no close nosy neighbors to bug you, no kids running down the street making all kinds of noise?
What are the homes going for there? Is there a good part of Custer or bad part like neighborhoods??? It probably is very low in population. But you still have the property tax problem in Custer because it is in Washington

This is just another reason why I'm leaving this state.
Washington State's property taxes are RIDICULOUS. Paying THOUSANDS of dollars per year for a home, unless it's a mansion, is insane.
Ultrarunner, best of luck on your situation. I wouldn't blame you if you left the state because of all of this.

So then that is the catch as I heard Texas you can get a brand new home for $200,000 just like Washington doesn't have a state income tax they make up for it in the property taxes. So Texas is similiar. Lower priced new homes but outrageous property taxes.

Because CA has an income tax and WA does not.
