Default If Tacoma is so bad,why are people moving there?

I have read the threads about Tacoma and it's problems. Yes it has crime, but so does Seattle. I also know about "the Tacoma Aroma", and from what a friend has told me, that "aroma" is getting less and less. There are more dangerous places than Tacoma and I doubt Tacoma is that horrible. Give any insight you know about it.

Basically, Tacoma is a large City...and like most large cities there are desireable areas and undesireable areas. Many people choose to live in Tacoma for the close proximity to their job, less expensive housing, and a chance to take advantage of an area that is currently in the upswing with lots of redevelopment and rehabilitation going on.

I go into Tacoma for work sometimes. It's pretty amazing the money they are dumping into that city to revitalize it. It's got alot of waterfront views and old historic neighborhoods. Also the city is becoming more progressive and yuppified. It's probably a good time to invest in that city.

I live in Tacoma and honestly....I don't see what's so horrible. I really don't think there's any more crime than any other city of this size. And, like every city there's always going to be areas that are less desirable than others.

I lived in Lakewood, Steilacoom, and University Place area (all these are in Tacoma) and I can tell you I loved it.. Apart from the bad gangs and crime.. Tacoma is so diverse and it's 45mins from Seattle.. And Water front views and lake.. Some places are just really nice and pretty -- You can always find some type of Job and I don't think the money is bad either, but than again I moved to Puerto Rico 4 yrs ago.. things do change.

sorry, but when I drive south toward Tacoma....lets just say I know when I am there without the signs telling me. Sometimes I get this eerie feeling that maybe I shouldn't get out of my car in Tacoma and just drive back up north.

I am sure there are good parts of Tacoma....but the bad outweighs the good here.

Can you explain what you're seeing? Sorry...I live in this area and I feel completely safe. Even at night. And again, what you're saying could be about any city in the USA. There are good areas and bad areas. It gets old seeing people say that a whole city is bad but they can't really point out any specifics.

I really hope Tacoma can make a serious come up, and get mentioned more positively, because for the most part, most of the Puget Sound Area is a nice place to live including Tacoma. Tacoma always get's viewed as the, "poor stepchild of Seattle", and a world apart.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's on Seattle's level or anything, but it is getting better, and that's more important. I've heard people mention Seattle, as if it were some super bad place to live, and actually compare it with Detriot (which is about the furthest from reality you can get). I always say go to a city and explore it for yourself, and get your own fill on it.

In general, The Seattle area or Puget sound area, is one of the best big city areas in the country to live in, in terms of low crime and good schools.

Yes Tacoma get's a very bad rep...........are there bad parts? YES, but there are also very beautiful parts, and alot of nice affordable places to live in Tacoma. I'll admit, in years past, I wouldn't have lived in Tacoma myself, that's mostly because I liked being up north more in Seattle, where I was born and raised.

But today -There is alot of revitalization going on in Tacoma, and some newer developement going on around their downtown area. (Light rail, condo/apartments etc)

Tacoma is in much better shape today, then 20 years ago, I believe. You can definitely find a nice area to live in Tacoma.

Sounds like an intelligent statement. I know that Tacoma has to be better than what many persons are saying. Why do you think people still put down Tacoma? I don't put it down because I know there are much worse places.
