My fiancé and I are PCS moving to Ft. Lewis a week after our wedding in September. We'd love to live in a downtown city environment where we can easily walk to restaurants and bars since we're young (both 23) newlyweds and don't want to live out in the suburbs. From what I've read Seattle seems too far of a commute for him every day and Tacoma sounds unsafe. Does anybody have any suggestions on other cities/areas to look?

Look at downtown/central Olympia. It's closer to JBLM than either downtown Seattle or downtown Tacoma. Smaller, but an extremely nice downtown area ...in my opinion.

Stay in Tacoma or Olympia if you are being stationed at Ft Lewis. No way should you even think about commuting from Seattle. Tacoma downtown might be dicey. You might look at North Tacoma. There is a cute area off of Proctor St. that I would love to live near. Maybe somewhere down near Ruston Way which is on the water. Plenty of restaurants/bars there. Can't help on Olympia since I don't live there.

Tacoma will give you more night life options but the crime is higher than Olympia. I hear that T-town has cleaned things up quite a bit since the early 90's when it was scary to drive through there but honestly I always tried to avoid spending any time up there. I have had young friends who have lived on the lower end of the Hilltop area that loved it. I abhor Tacoma, but then again I left the area to live in a town of 3000 people, so to each their own. Personally, I would check out both Olympia and Tacoma. They each are a reasonable commute and both will give you that downtown option with restaurants and pubs. You can see for yourself which one grabs you.
