Nice.

To the OP, if you and your boyfriend do decide to make Washington your home, welcome.

And I am kind of leaning towards the medical pot angle rather than as a "recreational" smoker; for one thing, as far as I know, you can't legally grow for your own recreational use whereas you can for medical purposes. I even often see medical card holders selling extra plants on Craigslist to other medical card holders.

As far as your other "needs" - I live in Lewis County and it is possible to find decent rentals in the price range you are looking for around here, but there are no universities - just a community college.

Also, this is a very conservative county (which sucks for me) and it might not "fit" you.

Well that sounds definitive.

How about west Olympia? It features the world's most famous hippy college.
I'm fond of visiting the place in my social studies.

$750 / month rent is doable too. I wouldn't have any ideas about jobs in the area.

I was thinking Olympia would have better job opportunities than Lewis County but I wasn't sure about rent costs.

Or....if someone doesn't mind a bit of a commute, my son and daughter-in-law have a nice one-bedroom apartment at the north end of Centralia, and just a couple of blocks from the freeway exit, and I think they pay less than $600.00 a month. For someone who doesn't mind freeway driving, I think it's only something like 25 miles from that exit (exit 83) to Olympia so working in Olympia and living in Centralia might work for some.

olympia / thurston apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

Centralia is cheaper, but driving isn't. The search can be refined to "olympia", "west olympia", "westside", "lacey", etc. and public transportation will be available.

You'll find lots of disclaimers of "NO STUDENTS" "NO SMOKING" in west Olympa. But the lower priced places don't have those disclaimers.
