Tacoma doesn't feel that crowded to me, but I am from there and have spent time in larger cities. I think maybe if you moved near a park, which there are a lot of, it would benefit your lifestyle. Also consider Federal Way? Federal Way isn't as dense and you can still find some residential areas that are forested but still close to all the amenities. I must say the traffic in Tacoma and the Seattle area in general is awful.. Depending on where you live the public transportation is decent. In the winter, the gray is dark gray and the days are short but it doesn't usually get unbearably cold (40's-50's) and there is a usually a drizzle. I mean the sun will pop out but when the clouds roll back in they are some heavy clouds. Winter is short enough though that Spring comes back in no time. And the Northwest summers are the best hands down.

I moved to WA from the city of SF, which is a pretty upscale city. When I first moved out here I lived in Bellevue, which is also pretty upscale..was there for 6 years. I always heard bad things about Tacoma...what I heard were from people that never even hung out there ...they just loved saying how horrible and ghetto it was...which made me start saying that I would never ever live there...well never say never because I have now lived in Tacoma for 4 years and I like it better than Bellevue and Seattle. It's more laid back here, chill etc..however , I will only live in the northend, which is the nice part of Tacoma. It's really beautiful and near the water. Are there ghetto areas and bad parts? yes of course...I just stay out of those neighborhoods and keep myself in north Tacoma. I love it!

Save this link Pierce County Neighborhood Crime It is the Pierce county crime search. Put in an address and it will show you the crime in that area and types of crimes. The further you get into Tacoma the better I have noticed. When you are entering Tacoma from Seattle that is a worse area.
