I saw a map that showed the itching-to-get-outta-Dodge attitude of each State.

Washington was average, but Oregon was low. What's Oregon got that Washington doesn't?

This does seem fairly accurate. Everyone I have ever met from Illinois talked trash about it the entire conversation.

Washington has way more out-of-region transplants with the huge military and corporate presence in the area, which Oregon lacks.

Many people from outside of the region can not adapt to our dark winters.

I agree most areas of the U.S. get more sunshine from November to April than Washington. I didn't find it any more sunny on the eastern side of the Cascades in winter time due to the inversion. The eastern side of the Cascades was a lot sunnier than western Washington in the summer months.

It's a culture thing. Oregonians like being "native" to their state and will often start an introduction with how many generations "native" they are. While, I've seen home state pride in other states, it's taken to a whole new level in Oregon.

I would say the same thing goes for Washington state.

I've never heard anyone introduced as a "native Washingtonian for 4 generations," where I've heard this type of introduction in Oregon numerous times and sometimes with great elaboration. For people in the audience that aren't from Oregon, it often sounds odd. It's definitely a different vibe there and a whole different level of importance placed on whether or not you, your parents, grandparents, etc were born there or not. In Washington, one might mention if they grew up in the area or something like that but it just doesn't go to the same level as what you find in Oregon.

Of course, Washington was originally part of Oregon

I think you are right about the lack of people who have lived in Washington for "4 generations". I misread it the first time. Eastern Washingtonians I have met had families living in the area for no more than 3 generations, at the most. I think maybe one of the people I knew may have been 4 generations and he had connections with the orchard business. It seems like all of the more established families all owned orchards. Maybe there are still more true natives living there than west of the Cascades. Although most "Native Washingtonians" I have met moved to the state as young children of the baby boomer generation.

Group think...

You are either just like them, or your views are not welcome or accepted.

30+ yrs on the border has proven that, though I realized it the first day at work. (with a mixed group)
