Need some advise from folks who live in or very familiar with the far northwest region of WA, specifically Bellingham, Ferndale or Blaine.

My wife and I plan to visit in that area sometime late August-September timeframe. Would that be a good time to visit? We would like to avoid as much of the tourist season as possible and hope to find cost of accommodations more reasonable than during the height of summer. We will be looking for a cottage or condo for the two of us (no kids, no pets) to stay for about 3-4 weeks but can stay longer if need be. We don't have to be on the beach (we already live by the beach in Florida at present)...inland location is fine with us. We are trying to avoid staying in a hotel. Thanks.

Check VRBO, there are plenty of rentals, 72 in Bellingham alone. We have had great luck renting through them. While schools here start the beginning of September, our great summer weather lasts until mid-late September. August is still the peak tourist season.

I second VRBO! I've rented properties through them from WA down to Central America, and overwhelmingly, what you see online is what you get.

VRBO is great if you can afford it. If not, check out CraigsList... if you are flexible, you can find cheaper stuff usually.

Also, Birch Bay is an area where many Canadians own second homes/cottages. They are there in the summer (especially around 4th of July) and Christmas pretty much. Other times, you can sometimes negotiate great deals and some will even advertise on both VRBO and CraigList.... negotiate with them if on VRBO because some of them would rather rent their place out by the month on the off season for much cheaper rates than dealing with it being empty most of the time. Birch Bay would put you in easy driving distance to both Bellingham (about 30 minutes if that) and Blaine proper (about 15 minutes if that).
