Hello Everyone!

My husband and I fell in love with the Olympic Peninsula after our family trip there 2 years ago and have been dreaming about moving there ever since. We currently live in Boulder, CO and are planning our move for the Summer of 2015 after my husband finishes up Grad school. We are very liberal, in our mid-late thirties and have a seven year old son. As a family, we are very interested in various cultural activities, music, art, nature, beauty, healthy living, etc. Our ultimate dream is to eventually buy a small parcel of land and have a nice little homestead, but still be near enough to a town center for work and cultural activities. Our primary concern is whether Port Townsend will be a good choice for us. My husband is to be a licensed Acupuncturist, and after doing some research, I have noticed there is already at least seven acupuncturists in Port Townsend. In a town of only 9,000 people, is there feasibly any market left for one more? And could it be expected that the neighboring rural communities would be open to that and travel up for treatment as well? Any other general information about the area would be much appreciated, as well as recommendations for other areas which sound fitting for us. We are NOT looking for any super big cities. Basically small cities with nice community and quaint small town feel, but open minded and large enough to accommodate his new practice. And, of course, with rural areas on the edge of town. Thanks in advance to all who reply!

I would say that Sequim may be a better choice. There is a larger population and it is between Port Angeles and Port Townsend. Land is relatively cheap so a new home could be the way to go. I just built one for 175K! You would like it here... beats the big city and if you want it is easy to get to. Let me know if you have any other specific questions. Good luck!

Port Townsend is a mecca for alternative medicine.

What do you do???

I would say he should get involved with the alternative med community and see if he can land a job BEFORE moving, if you are to rely on his income.

I doubt the town needs anymore.. Likely most work very part time and have other things they do to make a little money...

The town sounds like a fit otherwise... Depends how much you are willing to sacrifice, to live in the community.

Possibly earning some money elsewhere then relocating to Port Townsend once you have some "cushion" is an option...

IMO Sequim is not Port Townsend, as far the things you mentioned above go..

I am amazed to hear there are that many acupuncturists there already and find it hard to imagine that more are needed. I'd guess that those already there are struggling, but that's easy enough for you to determine, by calling to see how hard it is to get an appointment, and also, drive by and see what their offices look like. In Sequim or Port Angeles you could draw from the other, since they are only 20 minutes apart. That's a total of about 25,000 as compared to 9,000 in Port Townsend would be even better off in the Silverdale/Bremerton/Poulsbo area.

It would be great to get an update, if you're still around, OP.

What style acupuncture does your hubby practice? I'll tell you, there's a very serious dearth in Western Washington of practitioners of old-time Taoist acupuncture or Japanese acupuncture. About 98% of the acupuncturists in Seattle practice TCM, mostly herbalism, and their acupuncture doesn't get results. If your hubby is in the right niche, he could do well. If he's just another TCM guy, forgetaboutit. They're a dime a dozen.
