Need more help! ...towns around Tacoma
Well, I have taken advice of others and expanded my search slightly outward of Tacoma, and now I am wondering how far away some of the cities are that I have found potential apartments. I have searched Auburn, Spanaway, and Puyallup. Are these close? What thoughts does anyone have on these cities? Any thoughts on Fife? Any info will be helpful. Thank you!

They are all pretty close. Have you looked them up on Mapquest, and checked the mileage legend in the bottom right corner of the map? That should give you a good sense of distance among them.

If you want to work in Tacoma...just stay in Tacoma! Check out the North Tacoma and west end neighborhoods. Please avoid the traffic from Puyallup trying to come to Tacoma!
North Tacoma is very good and so is the West End neighborhood. Don't listen to all the negative people here. Check it out for yourself..
We love it!

Auburn and Spanaway apartments are not going to be very nice. Spanaway (or Spana-hood as the local kids call it) is not very safe, esp. in the apts, lots of low-income transient types. (Not that low-income or being transient is bad). Auburn also is a bit seedy around the edges, the only nice apartments I know of in Auburn proper are at the base of Lea Hill, though I can't remember their name.
Depending on where in Fife your apts are located, they may be seedy as well. Fife is kinda industrial.
I'd suggest checking out Puyallup the summit area of tacoma/puyallup, and N. Tacoma and University Place.

Stay away from Spanaway, Auburn, Fife, Lakewood, Lake City, and Federal Way. Either look in N Tacoma, University Place, Fircrest....I'd say Steilacoom but not really any apartments. Puyallup traffic is going to be a headache. No need for that. You may want to consider heading over the bridge to Gig Harbor as well. All the places I mentioned are reasonably safe, clean, are close to shopping, and aren't priced out the wazoo.

Check out the neighborhoods in "old town", or in the Proctor District. There are good schools, and great houses in that area. You can also check out Brown's Point and live across the water from downtown, an easy commute, too. Newer parts of Federal Way, west of I-5 can be very nice.
