Default Photography Classes in Port Angeles - 4 teen

Does anyone know of any photography classes in Port Angeles that could be taken by teenage girl? My niece is 16 and looking for a beginners class in photography. She's always enjoyed taking pictures and has a good eye but we want her to take a class before she buys her next camera. She saved $200 towards her last camera when she was 11 and we got it wholesale through my computer store, but she's looking for a $900 range camera this time so we want her to take the class so she knows what she needs to look for exactly.

Thanks for any info,
Kerri

I've heard that Port Angeles High School has photography classes and an active photography club. I just know this from talking to a parent once. I have no details other than their webpage which doesn't tell you much:

Photography Club

Thanks... she doesn't go to that school but maybe we'll have to ask if there is a way she can take that class anyway...

I couldn't find any instruction in Port Angeles. This is the website for Peninsula College. Maybe they have something in photography and I missed it; didn't read everything.
Welcome to Peninsula College

In Sequim:
one in July, one in August:
Charles Needle Photography - Classes, Workshops, Portfolio Reviews

Sequim High School course offerings:
Sequim: Course categories
Mr. Heintz teaches
Sequim: Mr. Heintz
So what I would do is look him up in the phone book and contact him, or write to him at SHS, and ask him if he can recommend a class or instructor. One photographer in an area of smallish towns will know all the other photogs in that area...

Then there's:
Photographer | Penn Foster Career School
and
NYIP's Complete Course in Professional Photography

What is your daughter wanting to do with her photography? A camera simple like the Canon Rebel would be a good starter. Nikon D50 is good as well. There's a lot out there. I live in Port Angeles and Sekiu and if you wanted to set up something I could meet with you and your daughter and talk about photography.

I just graduated from the Art Institute of Photography, so I feel I'd be able to help her out if you can't find a class. Also I know peninsula college offers some digital photography classes that are "community courses" which means anyone can take them, I think.

mod cut: contact information removed

I've taken the photography class at Peninsula College. They used to have a nice black and white darkroom too but I couldn't say they still do with everything being digital.

I'm still friends with the instructor, he is still there but now manages the student paper.

Hello all my niece got into running start this year so she is going to try and take a photography class next semester at Peninsula College, providing I can come up with the money for it. So keep your fingers crossed for me. :P Any info on selecting colleges and setting up a portfolio would still be much appreciated as well as camera's you recommend...

Good for her, both my kids did Running Start in SW WA and had great experiences and life-long-learning benefit from Photography classes. The instructor was an ex-military photographer/ WWII war correspondent and very helpful and very old (experienced). They did super work with my early large format digital camera (new for the time) and their own lab work using a manual SLR. Their composition, lighting, and Special Effects skills are far greater than mine. I enjoy seeing their pics. They can borrow my camera anytime!

Cost is only Books and supplies in Running Start, tuition is covered. Don't spend a fortune on camera equip, you can get something used that will work fine (It may get lost stolen or broken anyway). You can surely find someone to lend a SLR, as many sit unused. The D50 would be a great choice, hopefully you can find one used from someone 'upgrading'.

For future college interests BE SURE she gets a transfer contract so she can enter as a full jr. It saves much time and money to do that. Mine each did State U's (WSU & WWU). I would not go that route again. Private U's can offer enough scholarships to = public U costs, and you can probably get a more valuable edu. (WWU was fine, WSU was VERY terrible - just our experience... not flaming anyone else), Shop diligently for schools and get referrals from graduates and seniors, NOT the admission (marketing) dept.
