Smile Moving to Clarkston, WA

My husband, Kids and I are planning a move to Clarkston soon. I have done hours of research and there is one question I have. Does anyone know if it FLOODS there? I also have noticed some saying it stinks there also, is this something that maybe can not be gotten over? Thank you for your time in advance.

I have only visited there once or twice but the smell (which seems pretty constant) is from the paper mill there and tends to smell like cabbage (to me anyway)
The town itself is fine, but for me there would be no way i could live there just due to the smell. Maybe you get used to it after awhile?

I don't know about the flooding though, I hope some others can answer that one for you!

I plan to move there also. It's been a while since I visited. I think the papermill in Lewiston, ID is your answer. As a former resident of Linn County, Oregon. I got use to the smell of the mill in Millerburg. It helps to know wind direction. I do think you can live with it. As to flooding, such search it out on the internet. I think with all the dams on the Snake River, it would not be a problem. Good Luck. Driving by a pig farm is much worse, unless you are a farmer.

I've been to the Lewiston/Clarkston area a few times and have never noticed any smells ... It must not be that bad.

I wouldn't be concerned about floods in Clarkston. Most of the town (certainly the residential areas) is on ground that's rather above the river.

The smell is indeed from the paper mill. Sometimes there'll be a temperature inversion in the canyon that holds the smoke down over the town. That smell bothers some folks, doesn't bother others, and some people get used to it, so your mileage will vary. The residents live with it (if for no other reason) because there's a lot of jobs in & around that mill.

I used to live in Clarkston, not a bad place and as far as floods I have never known of one, Lower granite damn would have to fail and lock up to not be able to control flood waters.

Smile Somone who actually lives here

I live in Clakston, Wa. and you do not have to worry about flooding. Smell is called the "smell of money" ha ha since part of it comes from a paper mill in the neighboring town. which is less than a mile away called Lewiston Idaho. Through the brillance of the city of Lewiston they also decided to put a compost plant across the river from downtown (which they currently are re-vampin) and during the summer Lewiston will smell like hot trash. However you will get used to this. The climate here is great and you are in luck if you are or want to be an outdoors person.

We moved here 2 yrs. ago from the coast. We LOVE IT...there is no smell to speak of, Lewiston, Id. is different, that is where the mill is. I think we have maybe got drift of the smell 4-5 times in the 2 yrs. but barely smell it. Again, we did live by Everett, Wa. where there was a pulp mill. They have closed down many mills in the state, I hope this one does not go, as it employs a lot of people. Happy to answer any other questions for you. L W

We have been here a year - Clarkston doesn't have a "smell" that is anything that would be a worry. Paper mill smell I have dealt with in lumbering areas of Oregon - now that does stink. You have nothing like that here. Floods? From what people here have told me, more the difficulty is the extreme dryness. There is little rain here. I would be concerned only about one thing. If you notice, there is LOTS and LOTS of real estate for sale here. When you start checking, many of the nice homes have been on the market for awhile. Also, when you check, it seems they are rather well-off retirees who haven't been here too long. I don't know the reason. Also, people retire here and tire of the very hot and dry summers. Everybody seems to prefer living near Moscow if they can afford it - cool summers. It is ALWAYS ten degrees cooler in the Moscow area. However, Clarkston has cheap real estate and Moscow is quite a bit more expensive. One must pay more for the lovely scenery around Moscow area. Hope this helps you. Now please note I have met a number of retirees of moderate income (not rich) who are very happy to be here, love hot weather and the small town of Clarkston. I hope you find what you will wish for in the near future!
