We moved to Washington from out of state in 2013. Rented in Bellingham for a year while searching for a place to buy. Found a very nice house in Lynden, Wa. Lynden is very near lots of Dairy farms and other types of farming, so we expected to get that familiar farm aroma and we had no problem with that. Then, one day we caught a whiff of the most putrid foul smelling stench I've ever had the misfortune to inhale! We then noticed that the stench can be detected, intermittently, at any given time of day or night, spring summer, fall and winter! It turns out that the dairy farms are actually CAFOs or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations that produce thousands of tons of manure yearly that is kept in "manure lagoons" huge earthen reservoirs of animal waste. There are at least 10 of these manure ponds within a couple of miles of Lynden, that release gasses such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane..ect into the air, and buddy, if the wind is blowing in the right direction(which it often is) the smell can make you sick! Putting the house up for sale and getting the heck outta here...probably take a loss but who cares...this town stinks! Other than that vicious smell...Lynden is an awesome place..too bad it smells like a sewer a lot of the time.

This is true. I've smelled very nasty stink in various parts of Lynden in different months / years. Truly awful.

I won't take jobs that require driving to Lynden any longer.

Yup, it does. Too bad, it's in a very beautiful area.

There's one of those near Sunnyside that would drop a raccoon in its tracks. Smells like regret.

Shhhh! You want to sell your house, right? So many people talk about Lynden as a welcome refuge from Bham's prices and problems, and you don't want to foul up that reputation.

Yeah..I get what you're saying....but, I think that I would have to disclose the fact the neighborhood sometimes reeks.

Lesson #1: Don't move next to a major dairy operation. At least upwind. Stink doesn't respect property lines.

Was looking at real estate in Whatcom County last year. Was wondering why Lyndon was so much cheaper. Glad I read this. If I wanted putrid mega-dairy smell I could just move back to the San Joaquin Valley.

It's farm country, it's not like they are hiding those big barns. The houses I would be concerned with are the ones that are down wind from a transfer station and under a flight path in Ferndale, that has been a rude surprise to some new owners.

CAFO's have a special stentch.. A bad for the environment stench.. You will not find that smell at an environmentally aware farm.

They aught to use methane digesters and turn that worst of the worst pollution into energy.

Next time you open your wallet and by dairy.. THINK about where it comes from.. Buy from.farms that are doing the right thing!!

The vote you cast with your pocket book is the only one that counts in our corrupted nation.
