Just renewed my plates and insurance in our current state.
We will be moving to Vancouver shortly. is it a big deal to
drive around with out of state plates for a few months ?
(our insurance will be valid)

yes.
I believe you have three months to switch to Washington Plates after you declare your residency.
Washington state will NEVER pass on an oportunity to collect money from its citizens.
It, of course, only will matter if you get pulled over or have an accident.

Actually its 30 days. I got a chat with a police officer concerning this once not long after moving to WA.
From the WSDOL website: ( http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/moving.html)
When you move to Washington State, you have 30 days to title and register your vehicle. Once you do so, you will be issued Washington State license plates.

I am not sure they would expend all that investagative work just to bust you for failing to transfer your title and registration when you actually go in to do it. Its not like they know the day you put the rocks in a circle for your campfire. I got stopped because a police officer had seen me around for more than a month (actually 3). I suppose that the larger the town, the more likely you would get away with it (getting lost in a crowd so to speak).

Yeah no doubt.
So what part of the country did you move from ?
The reason I am asking is we are debating whether
to move our stuff via common carrier (ABF) or to
use a rental truck (Penske) with a car carrier.
Twice in the past I came from Chicago to Cal,
with a truck/car carrier combo (both times in the summer).
This time around it will be a winter move from Cal.
As I sit here typing I am leaning towards letting an
experienced trucker handle the truck.

I came from eastern Oregon about 15 years ago and did my own moving. Rented a truck, etc. Cheaper but a lot more work.

I hear ya.
The ABF deal is a you load it they drive it
( price is about the same )
A friend who travels frequently to Medford
advised me of issues such as road closures
due to weather and mud slides.
Sure would love to here from some folk who
have used ABF.
So from Eastern Oregon to Western Washington..
My oldest son was considering moving to Spokane,
until I told him we were moving to Vancouver.
( man it's amazing how many times I have to explain
to people that it is not Canada)
Well psprague 15 years in Washington sounds like
it has worked out well for you.
Thanks for the info man.

I'd be careful about not registering my car within the time frame. I don't know how they do it in WA but I moved to Georgia last year and I had to prove that I still lived in another state within the last 30 days. Something like a utility bill or pay stub worked but otherwise they were going to charge me late fees. The fees weren't much but it would have been around $35 for me (depends on how much your car is worth, what county you live in, etc.) I just wouldn't want you to go in thinking your fine and have to pay extra fees.

We moved here to Washington in August and I just got my plates in October. There is a 30 day clause, but they said nothing to me about it when I went to get the plates, nor did they charge me any fine. We did get our WA drivers license's during the first 30 days.
