Default How Do You Pronounce Tahlequah in Washington?

I lived in Oklahoma for 60 years and moved to Washington in 2005. Today I heard a report on FOX news channel from a reporter who's driving coast to coast talking about the election. He had left Arkansas and was getting ready to meet with some Cherokee Indian folks in Tahlequah. He pronounced it Ta LEEK wah. In Oklahoma it's TAL a kwah.

I've seen Tahlequah listed in relation to a ferry terminal somewhere in Washington and just assumed it was the same...but maybe not...so, how do you pronounce it in Washington?

They should send the reporter on a road trip between Natchitoches, Louisiana and Nacogdoches, Texas. Then he'd really get his tang all toungled up.

As far as I know, it's pronounced the same way in Washington (Vashon Island) as it is in Oklahoma.

Methinks that Fox reporter needs some lashes with a wet noodle.

Years ago, a person not from Washington called about a new restaurant my boss was building. In Chehalis. Boy, did he massacre the pronounciation of that word.

Origin of the Name

The name, according to legend, derives from the Cherokee word "Ta'ligwu" meaning "just two," or "two is enough." The "two" refers to a meeting between elders that presumably took place shortly after the Trail of Tears. Three tribal elders had planned to meet to determine the location of the Cherokee Nation's permanent capital. Two elders arrived and waited for the third. As dusk approached, they decided that "two is enough."

Default And it's spelled....

An addition to my original question. In our local paper today there was another article about the ferry situation.

In talking about ferry route, it said "Talequah". I Googled both spellings and got sites for both. OK, so I know how you pronouce it...how do you spell it in Washington?
