We will be moving to the Ft. Lewis area next year (military) and are wanting to rent in a safe, family-friendly "small" town. Any suggestions?

DuPont, only about 8,000 population, or Lacey with 42,000 but also a lot more shops and restaurants.

When you say "small" town, how small? If you want a more rural atmosphere and aren't interested in the more suburban feel of DuPont and Lacey (excellent choices, btw), you might want to consider the Roy/McKenna area or the outskirts of Yelm. They are on the southeast side of the base and will be very convenient to the East Gate off of SR507.

Roy and McKenna will have a more community feel. Yelm is bigger and has a Walmart, some grocery stores, fast food places, and doctors' offices. All are part of the greater Yelm area but Roy and McKenna are smaller, more quaint communities.

Also convenient to the East Gate is Graham and Frederickson but they are more spread out and "ruralish" and may not have the "safe and family-friendly" atmosphere you seek ...but you may want to check it out to see.

Yelm, Roy and McKenna seem to consistently be the answers we have been getting. Any downsides to these areas, as far as the culture goes?
