Hello all! My name is Taylor and I'm a 22 year old moving to Tacoma! I am originally from Des Moines, IA but have lived in San Jose, CA for 3 years. I wanted to know anything you can tell me about the city. I am hoping to go to community college and will be getting an apartment. What is the most reliable way to look for apartments in Tacoma and if anyone could tell me about TCC that would be great! Thanks so much for your help.

-Taylor

Hi, Taylor

It's important to rent an apartment in a complex with a repair person on site several days a week. Management on site as well would be even better. In complexes, everything is run by a business. It's the only way to go.

WA's small property landlords are odd. They do not have to register with the state as a business, they do not have to submit business income and expenses, they do not have licenses: landlords do not know what they are doing.

Most think of tenants as taking in juvenile delinquent foster children. Some have asked me to write an essay about why I want to live in their property. (No kidding!) I've had a stove top that didn't work for 5 months then was finally repaired when I gave 3 days notice to quit. I had no oven in another place over a winter for 7 months.

Properties tend to be shabby. Landlords tend to be nosey and show up without notice. They think they are being friendly.

I'm from the Bay Area, too, and have been astonished that landlords in WA do not understand tenants are clients who help landlords eventually own the property outright. Tenants get a place to live and landlords get help in buying a property.

Apartments.com is pretty good.

Good luck!
