I don't agree that the liberals of the older days are gone (at least I know what you mean, there). They're still here, but they're Boomers, mostly, and some kids of Boomers, now in middle age. They're definitely still around, though. But they don't make headlines too often, so people who rely on superficial impressions and the day's headlines (to say nothing of dubious internet "sources") for their view of life, would form a distorted impression of the polity.

I know of no such anecdotal reports, but knowing human nature, there probably have been a few incidents. If you are talking about Washington state - I think you just made that up. A large number of liberal hippies have lived synergistically with the conservatives in North Central and North East Washington for 30-or-so years - they are tolerated just fine. Not like the intolerant, "me-too" liberals in Seattle.
