Bellingham or Olympia. B'ham has a hospital and a state university, close hiking, lakes right on the edge of town, good for kids. People living there complain the COL is high, but that's very relative. For you--a piece of cake. Olympia has a couple of hospitals. From Olympia, you can drive to the Olympic National Forest, and other regional parks. The city is on Puget Sound, like Bellingham. I hear Olympia gets more rain than B'ham; you might want to check that out.

Otherwise, consider Edmonds or Lake Forest Park, just north of Seattle. Easy commute to downtown from each, or to north Seattle hospitals. By "easy commute", I mean there's good public transit. Both border on bodies of water, for boating, and Edmonds has a ferry to the Kitsap Peninsula. There's a bike trail from Lake Forest Park along Lake Washington to the University District and Children's Hospital, that continues to Gasworks Park and Lake Union. Great for the bigger kids to go biking on weekends. Some people use it as a bike commute route to the University. There are also hospitals north of Seattle, a closer commute to Edmonds or LFP.

You'd be shoveling snow in Spokane, and you said you didn't want that.

Olympia came to mind while reading the Original posting. I stayed there a month and it seems within the budget.

I was also thinking Bellingham but not sure it's big enough for a town. I like this area because the character and I consider Vancouver BC a great metropolitan area to visit.

Olympia has several major hospitals (Providence, Capital Medical Center, Mary Bridge, Seattle Children's), while Bellingham has one (St. Joseph's).

I need your help. My husband and I are over Southern California, we have lived here all our lives and we just want OUT. A little background: We are in our early 40's with 4 children, ages 15, 13, 8 and 6. We prefer 4 seasons, we don't mind rain, but we aren't necessarily wanting to move somewhere it rains every SINGLE DAY either. I don't like big city life, I'm more of a suburb kind of girl that wants close access to a big city for things like concerts or fine dining once in a while. I don't want to be shoveling snow out of my drive-way or praying my car will start either. I would like summer activities for my kids (lakes, hiking, etc) and have some warm weather in the summer. I am an RN and my husband is a Firefighter/Paramedic so I will need access to a decent paying hospital within 30 mins away. I was originally looking at Sammamish, Issaquah area but the cost of living is pretty high. We make 175K per year. I just can't afford to buy a 1 mill home on our income. I then ventured over to Spokane and liked how affordable it was, but I honestly think my family and I would enjoy a Seattle suburb more. I need your help. Where is a good city that is considered safe, good weather, decent pay with a good school system in Washington that won't cost me a fortune? I do NOT want to live in the middle of nowhere, however I don't want to live in downtown Seattle either. Does this even exist or is it too good to be true? Thank you!
Move to Vegas or Phoenix. You won't like either Seattle or Spokane (let alone the Portland suburbs).

If you can deal with the weather...(we_tside of Cascades)
(you need to define your climate / recreation ideas)

For we_t WA...
Bellingham (Proximity to BC is handy, as are water sports and skiing)
Olympia
Bremerton / Silverdale

Vancouver metro (would avail Portland employment (9% income tax in OR = ~ 5% effective rate) and activities)

East WA... Wenatchee, Cheney
