Bill introduced to keep Washington in Daylight Saving Time year-round

BY MYNORTHWEST STAFF
JANUARY 14, 2019

Three Washington State Senators pre-filed a bill on Friday to keep the state in Daylight Saving Time permanently.

The bill is being co-sponsored by a trio of state senators: Democrats Sam Hunt and Kevin Van De Wege, and Republican Jim Honeyford. If passed, state residents would no longer have to reset their clocks twice a year, instead allowing Washington to remain in Daylight Saving Time year-round.

....Much like similar legislation approved by California voters last November, it would need to be authorized by Congress. If Washington’s passes but is not approved by Congress, the bill says the state would then petition the U.S. Department of Transportation to change the state to Mountain Standard Time year-round instead.

Pardon the ignorance.

So, it's a good thing?

I think it would be with daylight hours limited in the Winter.

My hubby would love it if this came to pass.

The idea of changing the clocks back and forth makes him crazy.

It would get dark at 5:30 rather than 4:30 in December. That would be a big improvement in quality of life.

Of course everyone realizes this does not change the total daylight. But it does do one thing...it offers more daylight in the winter in the afternoon and less in the morning. So in essence, winter would just be a transfer of daylight between morning and afternoon. Summer would obviously not be changed.

However, I have heard proposals to stay on Standard time year 'round as well. This would be terrible, IMO. That would create more sunlight in the early morning in the summer before most wakeup, and less in the evening, when Seattle has its best weather.

I say, either go Daylight year 'round, or keep the current system!

But, it ain't gonna happen unless WA is joined by OR and CA. The three States need to lineup for various reasons, but most importantly, general business and transportation from a symmetric standpoint.

I'm in full support of that bill. I'd much rather have more winter daylight later in the day than earlier.

Though there will be a lot of parents opposing that with concerns about pitch black morning bus stops.

Like the winter of '73-'74? When daylight savings time extended through the winter due to the oil crisis? I walked to school in darkness, and survived it just fine.
