Hi, my boyfriend and I and our 7 year old daughter have decided to move to Tacoma at the end of Feb, beginning of March. My daughter has ADHD and sensory issues. I am looking for the best public school for her as well as the safest and moderately priced apartment, We are looking for a two bed two bath for no more than $1300. We need the safest place and best school for our daughter as well as any recommendations on where we can restart her counseling who will also keep up with her medications. I am also in need of the best/safest daycare or aftercare. The school for her, plus our apartment, and her new counselor all need to be fairly close. Also, how soon should we try and apply for an apartment? Thank you everyone in advance for all the advice and recommendations.

Have you looked at anything online? You may be in for a BIG shock cost of living-wise.

For crime follow Tacompton Files on Facebook. Right now we are literally having one of the biggest crime waves since the 80s gang problems in T Town. Someone shot a child in one of our parks with a BB gun for no reason just a few weeks ago. be aware before you pack up and leave a cost-friendly, safe place like Tulsa to come here.

There are lots of jobs though but the cost of rent is higher than what minimum wage covers by a looooong stretch.

I know that the cost of living is higher, my boyfriend works for AT&T, so I know he will have a decent paying job that also has benefits such as paying for internet, our phones, and other expenses as well. Is Tacoma not very safe then? I just would like to either know the safest place with good schools in Washington state or in Tacoma.

Hm...AT&T just has little sales shops out here I thought. If he makes well over $65,000 per year it could be do-able to live here and support a family on one salary. Tight, but do-able.

Like I said, go look at Tacompton Files and the Pierce County Crime and Drug watch page on FB, you can see how it all goes down. Generally the north end is quieter and safer but it is MUCH more expensive. I live on the southside (98444) and I pay over $200 a month just for taxes on my tiny 2 bedroom home. Double that for the northend.

Gig Harbor is relatively safe, as is University Place, Fircrest, Steilacoom and parts of Puyallup. All are very high cost areas.

Avoid South and East Tacoma.

Look in North, West, and maybe Mid Tacoma. Also Ruston, University Place, and Steilacoom. For instance:

Jess_2019, if you can raise your rental budget to $1400 - $1500, you have a better chance of finding an apartment near good schools. Look in the areas near Lowell, Stanley or Sunset schools, all of which are highly rated.

Several of the apartments (<$1300) I linked above feed Lowell (Tacoma) or Sunset (University Place). Also Point Defiance and Downing (Tacoma), and Evergreen Primary (University Place).

There are 2bd apartments available for <$1300. Increasing the budget (to $1,400 or $1,500) will increase the selection, especially near good schools.
