It's simple -- they've got it right: Pew-AL-up. Don't look at the spelling. Just say the sounds we typed. "AL" is the accented syllable, and it sounds like the man's name, Al.

At least it's not named after what the tribe was originally called.... spwiya'laphabsh.
Then you'd really have some issues.

Great post, Wannabe! Thanks! Wonderfully informative link, with lots of history I'll bet most of us didn't know. I didn't.
"...spwiya'laphabsh, meaning generous or welcoming ... in the Puyallup Nisqually tongue of the Salishan family of languages spoken among Northwest Coast". Thank you!

You can do it at a trot
You can do it at a gallup
You can do it real slow
So your heart won't palpitate
Don't be late
Do the Puyallup!
Do the Puyallup!
Do the Puyallup!

I think I've posted this before in another thread, exit82, but you can hear it pronounced here.

You're welcome...I didn't know all that either. I was just doing a search to find out if the pronunciation was different from how most of us say it. And voila! Lots of good stuff to know came up.

PEW-ALL-UP
Heard a news anchor pronounce it POO-ya-loop once. You could always tell a new one
