Default Other places you might not want to live in

When we lived in Puyallup we laughed at Tulalip and wondered how that might be pronounced. But we were always grateful we didn't live in Enumclaw, Klickitat, Kooskooskie, Tumtum, Tumwater, or Walla Walla.

Years after leaving Washington, we moved to the southwest from New Hampshire. On the way we passed through Toad Suck, Arkansas. Now that we live in New Mexico the names are often easier to pronounce but sometimes leave us wondering, like Truth or Consequences, Pie Town, and Elephant Butte. Nearby Texas has a town called Hell, and another one called Uncertain (which always reminds me of Middlesex, Massachusetts).

But wait, what about your own Humptulips? The mind boggles...

Oooh, I totally forgot about both Tulalip and Humptulips

And I thought of another one: Dosewallips (am I spelling that right?!)

Lots of the really mysterious names are on the Olympic Peninsula.

Does anyone remember those radio commercials for the Swinomish Casino where they joked about how to pronounce it?

T or C, New Mexico, was renamed for a radio quiz show publicity stunt, if memory serves. I once had a professor who'd gotten her PhD at UNM and she told us that story.

Ahahaha! Yeah, we have some funny names. Elephant Butte? lol!! The way you pronounce Tulalip is tuh-lay-lip. Yeah, Enumclaw is beautiful, but quite boring in my oppinion. Grew up there, then moved to England to be with my mom, and now Im thinking of moving back to Mt.Rainier! It is soo beautiful up there.

I always remember it because of the punchline of a joke a salesman told me a long time ago about two explorers named Attle and Allup. Just as they crested a hill a skunk ran in fron of Attle and he said "Pew Allup" and Allup said "See Attle". I know that's not how they really got their names (I know they are from the original Native American names) but it helps me pronounce them correctly.

I live in Oregon now and you can tell an outsider by how they pronounce Oregon and Willamette among others.

My sister-in-law, who is from The South pronounces it, "pull-y'all-up."

This thread is hilarious! You guys are a hoot! It all reminds me of the funny town names I saw when driving long haul. I remember coming out of Arkansas heading for Connecticut (sp?) and every town, so it seemed, ended in "ville" thisville, thatville, everywhere a ville ville! I got to laughing about it come night fall. (I did everything to keep my sense of humor on the road.) I thought to myself, " Im really surprised I haven't gone through a "chickenville!" I kid you not....not many minutes later another truck driver blew by me carrying chickens! About then I was ready to pull over and call it day!
I'm still amused at a town in Nebraska called "Gothenburg". Makes me wonder if that is where Batman and Robin lived?
The names were funny and somewhat confusing to me after I moved up here. I did my best to adjust. I thought I was doing well until I was talking to my daughter in law last year and said something about Whatcom County. I pronounced it what come! She said nooooo, it's what ***.....no more said....I actually thought it must be a somewhat "new county" thinking it was internet related! dot com! Whatcom! lol...
There's funny town names all over...Great thread! Made me crack up several times!
