Hi,

I'm hoping to move here from the east coast with my sister where both in are 20s and hoping to have a fresh start. We both love the outdoors and are super liberal, she's hoping to go back to school to get her masters in Psychology and I'm hoping to go back to school as well for forestry or something in the maritime industry but am not sure. We are looking for an apartment for under $1k- 800 with lots of social activities for people are age in the area, as well as a low commute time, low crime. We don't mind living outside the city as long as the commute is not to much to handle. What are some recommended cities?

That is a tough order.
Personally I think your rent pricing requirement is holding you back.

Me?
I wouldn’t want to live in a low cost housing area.

You need to be close to a proper school and that is going to cost.
That is not going to be cheap.

That said, I have never looked into that but I know several people that have.

I also do know that most country clubs in CA don’t get their mail delivered to their doorstep.
They have to go to the club house.
Most club houses also have a board for announcements.
Lots of my friends have posted on those boards looking for a place in these areas.

They have scored big time.

Cheap rents at big time places.

There are lots of people that would like a decent person using their in-law houses on their properties to act like a life line for when they need help

You might want to consider this venue.
Proper wording will help.

Good luck to you.

All the best.
Andy.

The wife and I landed several good deals 40 years ago when we were renters.

We just “cherry” picked the properties that our friend didn’t want.

It was a good thing.

Andy.

Sounds like you'd be a good fit for Bellingham, but your apartment budget needs to be higher. I don't think you'll find a happening area with other young people in your budget. WWU is in Bellingham, but no forestry degree. You'd have to go the UW or WSU (Pullman) for that. You might check out Pullman as another option (lower rent), college town (WSU), but also it's in the middle of nowhere.

Figure out where to go to school, then decide where to live:

https://maritime.seattlecentral.edu/ (Seattle/Ballard)

https://www.edumaritime.net/washingt...titute-seattle (Seattle/Sodo)

https://northwestmaritimeacademy.com/ (Gig Harbor)

Seattle Area Master's Degree Programs: https://www.niche.com/graduate-schoo...le-metro-area/

Seattle apts: https://seattle.craigslist.org/searc...date=all+dates

Tacoma apts: https://seattle.craigslist.org/searc...&min_price=800

Rents are low right now due to the pandemic, so not a bad time to nab a one-year lease, but don't be surprised if your rent jumps up after a year, especially in Seattle.

OP, I don't understand. There are two of you to pay rent together, right? So why are you limited to $1000/mo. rent, or did I misunderstand your budget? Presumably, you're looking for a 2-br. apt. on $1000? Or a 1 br., and the other would sleep on a sofa bed in the living room? More info needed. A 2 br. (or even a 1-br.) can't be had at your price point, anywhere near a university with a forestry dept. and an oceanography dept., or the like.

The UW has programs that would fit those interests. But the greater Seattle area is unaffordable to both of you, unless you rent on the Kitsap Peninsula and take the ferry to Seattle, then public transit to the UW. Those transit $$ would add up, and the commute would become taxing.

Crazy Donkey has found rents in your price range in Tacoma. But UW Tacoma doesn't have forestry, oceanography/marine science at all, nor Psychology at the MA level. Neither does UW Bothell. It's all at the main campus, in Seattle.

Weetern Washington University in Bellingham offers marine sciences degrees, no forestry, and only "experimental psychology" at the MA level, which is preparation for PhD studies and research. No clinical or applied psychology. Rents in Bellingham are relatively high, and climbing, generally.

Honestly, you two couldn't afford rent, even if you each rented a room in a shared household somewhere. Here's a little box you could afford in Bellingham; one of you could have the sleeping loft, the other could sleep on a fold-out in what passes for a living room.

You might have better luck in Eastern WA, where housing costs are lower. You'd have to check out the public university programs over there. (Washington State University, in Pullman) But you won't find marine sciences out in the desert. WSU has forestry, but maybe not a Psych MA, you need to check.

Another option would be a Community College 2-year degree in forest management. That would give you more options for affordable locations, but I don't know how to fit the Psych MA into the picture.

Super liberal, you want Seattle. Seattle is super liberal and has lots of social activities and outdoor activities really close.

Down side is a high crime rate which will continue to get worse as the city government continues their program of defunding the police. Homelessness is bad. Riots and organized vandalism are common. Commutes are horrendous with snarled traffic and inadequate roads. $800-$100 isn't even getting close to what it would cost for a rental large enough for two people.

If you don't mind being a bit further south, Portland Oregon is even more liberal. There are plentiful activities and it is close to assorted outdoor activities. Homelessness and rioting are even worse, crime rate is high, commuting is miserable. I don't think $800 a month would get you an unfinished garage.

Even further south, Ashland Oregon is super liberal, low crime rate, close to outdoor activities, but it is a retirement community, so not much for people in their 20's. One of the most expensive places to live in Oregon. You would have to increase your housing budget.

That's about ii for super liberal. You might be able to find something with ordinary level of liberalism, but I don't think you can afford to rent anywhere on the west side of the Cascades without greatly increasing your housing budget.

I hope you are open minded if you are super liberal and want to work in either forestry or maritime. These are excellent occupations but you will need a realistic outlook to get far IN them.

Many small and large college towns around here.... cheaper to live in the smaller ones.

Nowadays, it's possible you don't need to live IN the college towns to go to school there. Perhaps online and remote schooling will become a thing for at least next year. Too soon to tell.

Seattle is going to be your best bet for the things you're looking for, with Bellingham or Olympia as possible alternatives.

There's just one problem - $1,000/mo doesn't go very far for housing anywhere on the west half of the state that's near an urban center/colleges.

Unfortunately, there's no way around the fact that cost of living is rather high in western WA anymore. You will either need to double the housing budget, or consider a situation such as rooming in a house with other people (where the rent is split 4 or 5 ways...).

Where on the east coast would you be moving from? It's possible the wages may be higher here and help somewhat with the housing funds if you're coming from a low COL area.
