I just had a realtor tell me she wants a 10% commission to sell a property in Pierce County. Is this the going rate these days? I've always paid 6% in the past.

Interview more than one agent. Commissions will vary anywhere from 4%-12% depending on the property and what's involved in the marketing. If you have a complex piece of property, if it's land that my serve as a future large plat subdivision, 10% isn't unheard of. Jinj is right, though, you pay what you want to pay. You're hiring somebody to do a job, hire who you feel will do the best at a price you're willing to pay.

There are other options of limited service companies that charge a flat fee of $500-$1000 and you do the work yourself. Options are pretty limitless for you.

You can list your home on the MLS for 1.5% and sell it yourself.
The higher percentage the more traffic you will get.
My realtor sold my homes ranging from 5.5% to 4%...

10%????? Doe's the realtor promise you sell your home in 30 days
or less, pay for for your move, or hire someone to stage your home?
For a 10% commish.
That is brutal.

I'm checking with a couple of other realtors, too, but I'm glad to know that things haven't changed that much. I'll see what the other realtors have to say. Thanks for the replies.

You mentioned "sale of property"...

For bare land, they like to charge 10%, but I would negotiate to 6% and of course require the usual monthly activity reports complete with contacts, advertising, showings, brochures, and on updated marketing plan every 60 days. Have a drop clause if they fail to deliver on the above Requirements.... My realtor's seem to get ~ 100x as much as my attorneys and Dr's (who charge by the hour)... but everyone needs to eat.... I coordinate all the closing and title work, as I prefer to keep my eye on the process. Most realtors seem to be mainly marketing focused and can be very lax on details that can cost you a lot of agony and legal expense. They are very motivated to a 'settlement' date
