Why am I paying insane real estate and living expenses just to be attacked by these eight legged freaks?

Has anyone moved because of the quantity and size of spiders here? I don’t like being under siege for 6-7 months out of the year. The giant European house spiders are where I draw the line.

I’m 80% serious. We have few other pests here in Seattle...but is there like a spider DMZ somewhere in the US with reasonable single family home prices? Caveat: cannot have other pests like scorpions or whatever.

Help.

Forget hot, humid southern states, they have everything crawling, flying or slithering. Maybe Maine, The Dakota’s, or Wyoming would work. Think cold and snowy.

Why does your house have spiders? I lived in Seattle for over 20 years, and never saw one.

How is this possible? What location and when was your house built?

Mine was built in the 1920s and although updated in many ways I’m sure there are untold crevices and the like.

LOL! One thing I definitely do NOT miss about the Seattle area! I hate spiders in general, and I think my house in Seattle was giant house spider headquarters! In the month of August, I was pretty much greeted every morning with one of those suckers in the shower! I found the sticky traps worked well to keep them somewhat under control. Here in Ohio, I have had some spiders get in, and some rather large-ish ones, but nothing like those monsters! OP, I do feel for you! Agree, don't move to the south or anyplace semi-tropical and definitely hear you on the scorpion thing! Maybe the Northeast or Midwest would work for you if you are serious about leaving the Northwest.

I don't know. Maybe it is too cold in Alaska for spiders?

Spiders don't live where there is nothing to eat, so spiders aren't the only bugs you have in your house.

Interesting. My first house was an old Craftsman bungalow from the 19-teens. Have you spoken to a pest control specialist, to find out what might cause spider infestations? It can be hard to find an honest pest-control guy, but when you find a good, helpful one, they can be a goldmine of info, and are happy to help.

It's your house, not necessarily the PNW. We rarely see them and when we do they're pretty small. If my daughters freak out when seeing one and beg me to kill it, I do and that's that. We had bigger spiders in our older home in CA and we saw them more often.

I agree with Ruth. Get a pest control specialist first. If the house is seriously infected, it may be a great time to sell with this crazy market. But I'd try to resolve it within the home before going to more extreme measures like moving to snow country USA. Take control of your home like a boss.

Even in places with more spiders like the tropics, they have to address these same issues. And if you visit a nice place there you won't be overwhelmed by them since they address them as well.

No scorpions or large mutant bugs here but we do get the periodic small house spiders, particularly in the spring.

Avoid the Southeast--I will spare you the gory details of the 6-legged horrors that you will encounter there.

Southwest might be bad, too. I was in Arizona once for company business and saw a very large spider called a blonde tarantula. I didn't mind this as much as I did the scorpions.

I think the Upper Midwest/Mid-Atlantic/New England areas would be your best bets if you aren't fond of crawly things.
