Puyallup, Buckley and Enumclaw are booming towns. I used to know them as small towns we'd go through on our way up skiing, but they're bustling now with lots of growth that commutes to Tacoma Especially Puyallup. They are on their way up to Crystal Mountain, one of our best ski resorts. They are beautiful places to live, but definitely West side climate, not East side like your original choices.

They have great air quality if there's no fires. If there's fires, the whole state is affected.

So any recommendations for suburbs at the far edges of the Seattle area that might be beyond the normal commuter distance so we're not competing with working folks?
Not sure about Buckley or Enumclaw, but if I remember correctly, the Sounder (commuter train) stops in Puyallup, so I'm sure there are LOTS of commuters living there. I left three years ago, and EVERY town in Western Washington was booming at that time. I imagine it's only gotten worse. The overcrowding and COL were the main reasons I left when I retired. Nice climate (if you like grey) and location, but the cons just outweighed the pros for me. Maybe you could look out on the peninsula? Although those areas are probably booming as well.

I've live in south King County for about 35 years. I have lived in both eastern and western Washington. . I would recommend that you visit in the winter-maybe a few weeks in January. Remember that in January the sun rises at around 8 am and sets at around 4:30 pm...combine that with our seasonal grey, wet weather- and western Washington is not for everyone. Many people have given you some great ideas about narrowing down your search too. Washington is a beautiful, but diverse state.

You might check Woodland, WA, about 29 miles north of downtown Portland. Easy access to I-5. Small, wooded rural community in the Columbia River basin.
