Will you be working in Tacoma? North End Tacoma is generally considered the nicest area (anything with a North in the address). Fircrest is a small pocket of Tacoma that's it's own little city that is also quite nice. University Place is very near (once part of Tacoma) and has a better reputation in terms of school district.
Depends on what you're looking for. I live in Gig Harbor (about 15 min from Tacoma) and it's a world away. Much quieter, slower pace of life. More trees and larger lots for the most part. But if you're looking for social scene and restaurant variety, Tacoma is way better.
I guess the best advice I can give is to take all the negative speak about Tacoma you're bound to hear with a grain of salt. It's a much safer, nicer town than a lot of folks will give it credit for.

Thank you so very much for your response and your help. I will keep in mind what you said and I like the idea of Gig Harbor, we will have to look around and see what we like.
