Vashon Island to Tacoma Commute - Anyone? (Gig Harbor: renting, home)

Hello,

I'm moving up to Gig Harbor next month and will be renting a home until my wife and I find a place that we'd like to buy. We will probably end up buying in Gig Harbor, but we are also entertaining the idea of living on Vashon Island and commuting to Tacoma. I will be working in downtown Tacoma doing shift work with odd hours 3-4 times per week.

Is there anyone out there who might be able to speak to the Vashon/Tacoma commute and the state of the ferry there?

Also, any information about the community on Vashon would be helpful. We're looking for a place with a sense of community, but not suburbia. As far away from the Truman Show as possible.

Vashon to Tacoma isn't a bad commute, but you're obviously limited by the ferry schedule. It's a 15 min ferry ride. Vashon is a bit eccentric, but definately has a community feel.
I'm very partial to Gig Harbor, as it has a great community feel and an easy commute to Tacoma.

The community on Vashon is great. Vashon *is* in King County, so you do have to put up with some nonsense at times.

Well I live on Vashon and don't have the faintest idea what that is...so I guess that's a good thing?
