Hello,
I really appreciate this website and everyone's input. My husband and I along with two children will be moving up to Washington from So Cal in a few months. My husband was offered a job in Seattle. I don't hear much talk about Shoreline, Edmonds or Mountlake Terrace. We were up there last weekend and really liked the neighborhoods and we like what we have heard about the schools. Can I get some more info on these areas because I really respect your opinions on these forms. You guys were right on about the south of Seattle areas. Thanks for you time. jen4pce |

You would get more replies if this was posted in the Seattle area forum. Perhaps the moderator can move it.
We had a child in the Edmonds school district (though, we lived in Bothell/Mill creek - not Edmonds) and we did NOT prefer it.... strongly. Edmonds, however, is a very cute little town. Of your three choices, with children, I would choose Shoreline. I would steer clear of Mountlake Terrace. |

Shoreline/Lake Forest Park is supposed to have good schools. Shoreline schools - Shoreline public schools - Shoreline school ratings - Best Shoreline schools

There are many things to consider beside the school district. In general, the Edmonds school district is okay and getting better. If you move to just east of Lynnwood, you will be in the Northshore school district which is very highly ranked. Shoreline and Lake Forest Park area is very expensive in terms of housing.
If I were you, I move to the area near Thrasher's corner which is in the Northshore school district and have your hubby drive to the park and ride and take the bus to work in Seattle. I currently live in this area I really like it. |

Yes Northshore school district is very good. The Edmonds Schol District is replacing its aging high school with a brand new high school near Thrasher's Corner.
The houses that are spring up in these areas are int the mid to high $600ks. Mount Lake Terrace might be bad now but it is a great place to invest. They have plans to redo the city center to make it more attractive. I know that investors are just buying up blocks and blocks of the downtown area of Mount Lake Terrace. They also have a great community center with a beautiful swimming pool. So don't rule out Mount Lake Terrace. In five years from now, it will totally be different. Lynnwood used to be a place where no one can touch. Now it is one of the places MANY CAN'T TOUCH. With the ways people are moving to Wa, it won't be long before all the less well known cities like Mount Lake Terrace be very expensive. There are places in Mount Lake Terrace that is not bad. So keep your options open. |

Yeah, but the OP has kids NOW - so who wants to be the guinea pig waiting for these areas to get cleaned up?

Mountlake Terrace isn't bad, I lived there for a few years before moving to Edmonds. It's only 4 square miles so it doesn't have much identity. I think of it as South Lynnwood (which may or may not be positive depending on your perspective).

I've lived in Edmonds for about 10 years and love the area. MLT has some marginal areas, but also a few nicer areas - so don't rule it out just becuase it has an MLT Address.
As far as schools, no, I don't have any children in school yet - but keep in mind that the Edmonds School district is HUGE, encompassing several high schools, and many many of the lower grade levels. I respect that Jenbar had a bad experience with the schools she dealt with, but that is one person, in one school "area", with one particular situation. The Edmonds School district has the same problems that every other district in the state has, lack of money, teachers and a "broken" public education system, even the fabled GREAT eastside school districts have those problems. That said, Edmonds keeps passing their levy's, and this weekend I saw the huge groups of graduates and families converge on the stadium for the graduation ceremony's for all 4 area High Schools. So, while I'm sure it could improve, the Edmonds district does seem to be able to produce students who manage to graduate from High School. And some of them even seemed relatively educated ![]() |
