Default Hotels in Tacoma-Safe

I am staying in a hotel on South Hosmer. Just wondering how safe the area is?
Is Tacoma mall a good place to shop?

I wouldn't go walking by myself at night there, but there's not too many places anywhere I'd do that. Take normal precautions of locking stuff in your car, being alert, etc, but it's not what I'd consider a bad area. The Mall has a ton of stores, should have everything you'd want.
