Default Tell me about Mt. Rainier

So, can you drive up Mt. Rainier? How far up can you go? Is it covered in ski resorts? Are they year round? Or is this mostly a mountain for scaling, because everyone's afraid it's going to erupt? It was so beautiful today, I'm fascinated by it every time I see it.

You can't "drive up" the mountain, but you can get close and personal at spots like Sunset and Paradise, within the national park. The mountain is farther away from Seattle than it looks, but the drive to the park is just 2-3 hours, depending on your starting point, and well worth it.

...Mt. Rainier itself doesn't have skiing, but nearby Crystal Mountain does.

Cross country skiing on Rainier is a treat. From Gig Harbor/Tacoma area it's about 75 min to drive up to Paradise, and from there the snow shoeing and xc skiing are incredible.

Is the mountain actually closer from Tacoma than Seattle? I always hear of Mt Rainer regarding the Seattle area.

Yes, Tacoma is closer. On a clear day, the mountain can look absolutely huge from places like Tacoma and Puyallup, especially from certain angles.

Ok, I'll tell you about Mt. Rainier...

It's an absolutely spectacular gift from God and thinking about its beauty makes me tear up with homesickness : (

My first daughter was born at St. Joe's in Tacoma, and I will remember until the day I die looking out the hospital window on that October day while the sun was rising and turning the mountain brilliant pink.

I'm sorry to get mushy on you when you're looking for information on going to the mountain to play--but I can't help it. I really do love that patch of land.
