Military Person Moving to Olympia
I know Olympia is well-known for its anti-military protests. I'm in the National Guard and am considering moving there. How bad is the anti-military bigotry within the citizenship of the city? It's one thing to stage grand protests, but another to openly cause problems for a military person living there. How intolerant is the vibe toward military people living in the area?
Thanks,
z

Olympia itself is not that anti military, in fact a lot of folks employed at Ft. Lewis and McChord AFB live in Olympia. But there is a small contingent of Evergreen State College students, famous for their protests. But even most Evergreeners are tolerant of a wide variety of people.
Nonetheless, you might want to think twice before applying the " I love Dick Cheney" bumpersticker to the back of your car.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was hoping for. If people want to protest something, I couldn't give a rip. If it turns into something personal, that's another matter. It sounds like there shouldn't be much of a problem.
No chance of a Cheney (or any other) bumper sticker from me. I'm a died-in-the-wool ReNothingCrat (or DeNothingCan, take your pick). If you don't bother me about how I choose to live my life, I'll be glad to do the same with you. That's my ideal kind of town.

ZombieCat,
You'd be surprise how many military people live in Olympia. I think the vocal anti-military contingent is small and harmless. We're a military family and have never personally encountered any negative sentiments.

I wouldn't worry about Oly or any of the surrounding areas. For as much as there are protests by the Evergreen students or whoever, there isn't a hate for the military. I work smack in the middle of Ft Lewis and McChord and there are alot of people who are against the war but 100% back the troops. It isn't like Vietnam where people are spitting and calling you a babykiller or anything. Just be prepared for some "different" views and lifestyles.

I agree, the anti-military vibe is the last thing you should be concerned about. The proliferance of child molesters and drug/homeless people in the downtown area would take priority on my list if you have children. Next would be the abundance of unkind Californians and their road rage.
If you aren't living in Olympia city limits, you'll be fine...
