Default Newly employed at UWT, single mom w/8 y.o., housing suggestions??

Hi!
I'm starting a new job at UW Tacoma in August. I've pretty much decided to move to the area from Silverdale, Kitsap Co to avoid the long commute (although many people do it), and sorting out the housing options. I've gathered enough info to find out some family friendly neighborhoods w/good schools (Proctor dist, University Place, Gig Harbor). But I wonder if those new condos 4-5 blocks west of UWT (around Yakima Ave ) are bad choices. They are relatively affordable (starting mid 200K) nicely designed, build green w/10 year Tax abatement homes w/low HOD. As the downtown area (museums and UWT) is improving and the university expanding, the area may become more desirable within a few years?? The obvious downside for me is the nearby public schools, and I can't afford to send my daughter to the reputable private school (i.e. Annie Wright). Also the area around the UWT may not be appropriate or safe to raise a young child? Maybe I should focus on the Proctor dist, which seems to be an ideal community w/good schools. Are there any nice apartment houses in the area? I'll appreciate your insights. Thanks!

The Proctor District is really, really nice. And so are the Old Town and Point Defiance/Ruston areas...The area you mentioned is clearly an improving area, but is not as much of a sure thing as Proctor.

I'd partially agree with IRA. The Yakima condos are very well built, and while the neighborhood doesn't have the reputation as Proctor, it tends to be more affordable and closer to your work. There are so many of those condos available right now, I think they could be picked up for a pretty good deal as well.
