True, and there is a reason for that. Real estate prices depend on demand. The prices are low in the area because nobody wants to live there, except for the recent influx of refugees from urban areas in California who don't know any better.

Industrial development is great for the enrichment of the few and the temporary survival of the impovershised, but it is ALWAYS detrimental to the environment and aesthetic quality of life.

The fish waste processing plant is part of that "major infusion of capital". The local politicians bent over backward to get it here and to convince the people that it would be a benefit to the area.

In the few months that it has been in operation, it has been shut down several times for environmental pollution, and the stench is unbearable. Just ask anyone who lives within a mile of it.

And that's just a small operation. Imagine what "the largest Biodiesel plant in the US" will do for the area.

That statement alone is enough for me to campaign for Fat Freddy as President.

But you have to learn how to spell first.

Seriously, the comment is so pithy and spot-on. I'm sick to death of the Chamber Of Commerce mentality that says "all growth is good growth." Uhhh, no, most abnormal growth is either cancer or a hormonal problem and either way it's pretty destructive.

Default You're missing out

Aberdeen & Hoquiam are actually beautiful little towns, if you take time to leave the highway and do some exploring. And it may accumulate a lot of rain through the year, but we've been surprised at the amount of sunny days. Sometimes, we leave rain in Seattle to find beautiful weather here!! And, our hill home did a good job surviving the hurricane Sunday/Monday. Power came back on during the night, so life is good again!
We bought a weekend place down here 4 years ago, and recently moved to a different wonderful home in the Bel Aire area of Aberdeen. We basically live adjacent to Olympic National park, and it's a nice, safe neighborhood, with lots to do nearby. (I think if you want to find sex offenders, you can do so in almost any run down part of most towns.)
I was born and raised in Seattle, and had the same negative impressions, until I took the time to explore away from the highway, especially the hill neighborhoods. The highway areas too are now improving, and new pride of ownership shows all over both towns.
Good luck in your home search!

If you lived on East First Street you'd be locking yourself in your house. Aberdeen is only enjoyed if your rich enough to live on Bel Aire. The rest of us however aren't so lucky.

You defend Aberdeen but yet you don't live in Aberdeen.

The only people who pimp Aberdeen are shills from the city council, realtors, retirees who never actually had to compete for jobs in Aberdeen, and burned out transplants who don't know any better.

Aberdeen is a ****hole. I won't get any better until the ruling power structure is pushed out by new blood. That probably won't happen either because everyone moving here is a retiree

I live on E. 1st street and I walk all around at all times.
It is very quiet. I heard it called felony flats before I bought the house here and have heard not to leave anything out, but I have not seen or noticed anything myself. When I have company they are always commenting on how peaceful and quiet it is. I have seen some iffy looking types, but i don't talk or associate with them and most of them don't seem to bother anybody, but then again I don't leave stuff out and don't associate with them. I leave my car unlocked and never worry about it. Lots of cats is what I notice the most, but that is good to keep the mice away. I definitely don't lock myself inside and don't really need to lock my doors at all. I grew up in the murder capital of America and in the worse neighborhood that they had. They had to bull doze an entire 5 block long street with a dozen apartment buildings, because of dead cops and gun fire every night, so anything compared to that would be quiet and peaceful to me. I don't think Aberdeen is bad at all. Go visit E. ST. Louis or grow up in the worse areas of Houston in the 70's and Aberdeen is paradise.

I am from Hoquiam, WA. I love it there!! The schools are awsome!! Also My Children and i love the rivalry between Aberdeen High school and Hoquiam High school. All my kids go to Hoquiam High School. This area might not have a lot to offer job wise right now. But it does in other apects. If i lived anywhere in Aberdeen, (which i NEVER have) It would be in the Aberdeen Highlands. Hoquiam is alot different to me then aberdeen is. Hoquiam is way more friendly, and i know this from experience from living there.

Stumbled onto this while looking into Aberdeen. Can anyone describe the current situation there? Want to move to Wa, looking for reasonable rent and nursing homes nearby (where i would probably work). East or west doesn't matter but here specifically comparing Aberdeen and Centralia. Thanks for any current info!
