Puyallup is a great place to live!!! We're about 50 miles south of Seattle (about an hour's drive, depending on traffic), and only 40 (or so) miles away from beautiful Mt. Rainier. Many places around town maintain their rural appearance, though the "city" is moving in rapidly. The schools are great, the kids are great, and the traffic is like most growing communities--terrible (but not as bad as most other places in the NW!).
We have lots of parks, trails, and the best fair west of the Cascades every September.
There is a strong Christian element in the area (though you wouldn't know it by their driving!)--nearly a church on every corner. We have a fairly decent mall and a superb antique district in old town Puyallup. Crime is minimal, though we have had our share of car prowls this last year. We're minutes from Tacoma, so if you can't find what you're looking for here you can most certainly find it there. We also have a great community college for extended education and the like. Many high school grads in the area get their Associates degree there before moving on to four year colleges.
I'm a country girl at heart, so Puyallup is good middle ground for someone who needs access to a city environment, but still wants that home town feel.
Housing prices are a little high (starting at about 250K for a SMALL house--no yard), but gas prices are not as bad as the rest of the NW (my station's @ $4.17/gal).
Any more questions, feel free to ask.
Best of luck to you and your family.

Puyallup is pretty quiet for most of the year, then goes bat**** crazy for three weeks in September when the fair is on.

It's either the second or third largest fair in the US by attendance with an average of 1.3 million people attending over 17 days. If the weather is nice through September it's not uncommon for them to have more than 100,000 people a day attend on weekends. Don't count on getting anywhere fast anywhere near the fairgrounds.

BTW. just so you don't embarrass yourself in front of the natives, it's pronounced Pew-al-up.

You know you're from Seattle when you can pronounce Puyallup, Issaquah, and Sequim.

Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!
And all those lilting "S" words -- Suquamish, Salish, Skagit, Snoqualmie -- and oh, let's not forget Chehalis, and Tulalip.
