Default Would in your opionions Bellingham be good for me

I'm a single 44 year old straight male. I am an AVID mountain biker, road rider and like to workout in gym. I am late in starting my career but got a degree and some years in customer service and am taking another degree in medical coding.

I moved from Boise, Idaho to S. California, and HATE it here (do I need to tell you why).

I need to work full time and probably will make about 30-40k first year or first few years

I need my own place and can't pay more than $800/month

I would like to meet a single, active woman with a good heart (not plastic), family oriented

Would Bellingham work for me?

I a bit bias. I love Bellingham. Not single, but I know if anything happened to my husband I'd still live here.
There are many good qualities about Bellingham. The quality of life we have here out shines all the places we have lived previously...SD, NE, Colorado...no doubt.
As being an avid mountain biker, I can't help believe you'll love the trails! Galbraithe is famous for mountain biking!
As for the monthly cost of rent or whatever, I'm sure you'll find something for less or around $800 a month.
We have so many gyms around here...kind of funny as many people rather to get out and be active outdoors all year around. But there are many for you to choose from.
As for single active good-hearted women...nope, just me and I'm taken!!!! LOL I'm sure there are many...I do have a single girl friend! Definitley not plastic!
Good luck!

Cool I'm thinking Neh...

What do you disslike about where you previously lived, because from your statement I would think you won't like it. Places I suggest you look are Boulder County, Metro Phoenix, Corvallis and Eugen Oregon, Charlottesville.

Oregon gets more rain but they are far more known for Mt Biking than B'Ham (I ride too). Boulder is great, can't afford it but you'll have almost 10 good months of riding. Phoenix has mountains inside and out, and a mixture of real, plastic and silicone, depends where you are in the Valley. People like Durango, CO for some reason you may want to check it out.

Now we are moving to B'ham because my wife wants gloomyness and I want the ocean...Marriage is all about compromise.

Don't like S. Calif.? I can't imagine — (not)

If you can stand your activities in cool weather and gray and rain, you'll enjoy B'ham. You can "get by" on your estimated rent and salary ... but forewarned: this place is changing rapidly and on track to become very much like California ... more like it everyday ... soon the entire west coast will be very homogeneous ... wetter and cooler to the north ... but "culture" (if you can call it that) is melding. It is also on track to become ever more expensive. Welcome to north Northern California.

good luck

Just to let you know Comedy, the reason people like Durango is because it's considered to be an outdoor sports capitol. Any and every outdoor activity you could dream of is right out your door.

I've lived in 22 states and I love Washington and Bellingham the most. Yeah it rains a lot in the Winter, thank God otherwise it would be filled with Californians. The Sailing is fabulous, excellent tennis club and the best "little" ski area in America - Mt Baker. The town has very little economic base which helps it from getting overbuilt but there are a lot of Seattle retirees (bleech..lawyers and dentists).

Good luck, Mtnbkr. I stumbled upon your thread as I too am looking to relocate to the same area, and have the same questions...what is it like for a single, active female in that area? I may need to live a little further south as my job is closer to Mt. Vernon, but I am told there is a good mixture of anyone from retirees to families to singles. I think if I decide to make the change and move there, I will probably get involved in some of the outdoor groups I have seen on the internet that have formed around the area (I have looked at the kayaking, but there is most likely a ton of other options for whatever you are into). I am originally from SoCal (one of those dreaded Californians), but have since lived in many other locations for training/school, and am really looking forward to moving to such a beautiful location. Best of luck to you with your decision.

I read that the Californian refugees are like the Okies during the '30s. Both were chased out by disasters: Okies from the Dust Bowl and the Californians from the Brown Tide.

I don't mind the refugees as long as they have money enough to live here. It's expensive vs. the amount/quality of jobs here.
