Or the sad story about James Paroline killed in west Seattle, that story was prominent in the news for a week. One killing, not 7.
The PI says the crime rate in Seattle is the safest it's been in 40 years with 24 people killed last year.
Seattle is safest it's been in 40 years, stats show
Stop watching the news every day and the violence in WA won't look nearly as bad.

It depends on where you live.
For example, in the local newspaper, it is common to see:
"14/17/18 year old shot in drive by in Sunnyside/Grandview/Toppenish, etc"
Murders in themselves are rare. The only thing creepy about this state is that a lot of well known killers originate or have lived in WA. Maybe its all the rain.
To whoever started this thread:
Crime is on the rise, dont epcect it to get any better. But the crime rate could be a lot uglier. A friend in NY told me there were 7 drive bys outside his apartment window in that day only...

Yeah, we may be low on the list in murders, but we do get to claim the Green River Killer, Ted Bundy, Wesley Alan Dodd, and Tacoma was the hometown of the DC sniper.

Very informative thread. I enjoyed the links to crime stats. Seattle has a pretty good crime rate overall and the trends are in the right direction too.

Crime stats in various cities seem confusing. I'm looking into moving to the Shelton area and the crime stats, especially for property theft, are very high. Then I checked the crime stats for Placerville, a nearby city with almost the same population as Shelton and the stats were high for Placerville too. But I have family and friends living in Placerville and they feel very safe and have had no problems. So, I'm not sure how close to reality the stats are.
For Sacramento, with a population closer to Seattle, we would like to wake up to hear about only one murder or drive by........

Stats are stats. One cannot go by stats alone. Especially crime stats. Crime stats get are not accurate, period. Ask any law enforcement officer. How many crimes happen that are not reported, not documented, lost paperwork etc.
There are many areas of Washington State that one can live peacefully. I'de live in Washington State before I'de live in Cali or New York thats for sure!

I have to disagree with the OP. First of all there is more to Washington state than the Seattle/Puget Sound area. I grew up in a small town in Central Washington and we had 1 murder in the 18yrs that I lived there. It was an elderly man who stabbed his caretaker with and ice pick. They ended up tearing the house down for scrap lumber because no one would buy it. Ironically, 10+ years later they built a big, new funeral home on the site where the house was. So please stop saying "Washington state" when all you are talking about is your local area. I find it hard to believe there is "a murder every day" anywhere in the state of Washington.

The Wenatchee one should be one of those rare cases (I may be wrong). The only other small towns where this happens quite often are in the Yakima Valley (That I know of).
The others are located in the Seattle Metro, which is 4.1 million people. Its kind of rather expected stuff like this would happen there, I mean Seattle is the prominent, and some ways the only big city located in the Pacific NW. Well known places like that act like magnets attracting all kinds of people. You cant expect a metro the size of that to be as safe as a small town. Impossible.
But yesterday I read a story that creeped me out. Have any heard of the Kennewick (Tri City; for those that are more familiar with this term) woman that stole an unborn baby by cutting open the womb of a pregnant woman (shes dead, duh)?
The exact same thing has happened in Pittsburgh
