That's the problem with American media. The idea is to sensationalize so that you'll watch/read, and they'll make more ad $$. In general, if you research you'll find that there has been an inverse proportion between violent crime and media coverage of the same. In other words, the more the violent crime rate drops, the more coverage time is devoted to covering murder, rape, etc.
Also, I am from South Carolina, originally, which per FBI stats has the distinction (2007) of being the most violent state in the nation. I live in Washington. There is no comparison between the probability of being a victim here vs being one there. In my opinion.

without a doubt American media sensationalizes the news it reports. however, are police blotters also sensationalized? couple more shootings and a murder or two today. hard to ignore.

Hard to interprit that data by itself alone. Per the FBI, Washington State ranked 27th in terms of violent crime (2004). SC was 1st that year, as it presently is in the 2007 stats. I've tried to find Washington's ranking in 2007, but have been unable to do so (help?), but did find that Bellvue was in the top 20 safest cities in the nation last year.
Lots of factors contribute to violent crime, which incidentally is down (2007, per FBI) by 1.6% nationwide, after a two-year increase, and a decade-long drop before that.
And while nowhere is 100% safe-even in the safest of cities- to characterize Washington as one of the most violent states is to mispreresent the situation.

Obviously it's going to seem like the most murders are happening here, because the news will only report murders in this state to people in this state. The only exceptions are the really weird cases. If the news reported the murders in the whole country, the news would take forever.
Washingon is growing quickly so, unfortunatly, crime natrually increases. Other states are far more violent, you just don't hear about it because the local news doesn't bother to report that simmilar and worse things are happening all over the country.

Crime Stats - Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs
Washington State is No Longer in denial of its violence. It is understood to be a social and economic problem. Every city in our state works on these issues along with community & group organizations, faith & cultural based, law enforcement, educators, systems etc. They educate Legislators.
Our nation is in deep caca, no state is immune. It is known that criminals conduct crime where laws are lax, there is no law enforecment, no re-entry programs, where citizens are vulnerable, schools weak and there are no positive social activities or programs.
The question should be how strong is the community? What type of leaders are representing? Are they strong with morals, are they caring? Does this community include the new generation of leaders who have social understanding and new concepts? How educated is the community on crime? Does this community care?
Are we going to allow our state to become the most violent? It starts in your community, neighborhood and block.
Peace
STOP THE VIOLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Try living in Colorado. We have had more large-scale shooting rampages than any other state. And 2 of ours could have been the worst mass murders in U.S. history.

If you let fear get the best of you, then you're the problem.
I live in SoCal, went to school in LA, survived the riots in the 90s, I've seen gang violence first hand.
With this economy I'm trying to get out and I'm looking to the NW.
I guess the "Seattle Freeze" is making some people crazy.

Dont cross into our state, youre just asking to get car jacked and gunpoint and shot on the spot. Its also very ugly here. No trees, terrible fishing. you would hate it here.

Let me guess: You're a charter member of "Lesser Seattle," right?
You are of course spot on about the conditions here!
