Default San Juan Island moving your stuff

So, how does one move to an island? I can't imaging them letting you put a giant Uhaul onto the ferry. lol. Is there a different ferry they'd use for heavier trucks and such? just curious. If I ever did move there, I'm from the east coast so it makes more sense to sell almost everything.

Oh, and does anyone know about apartments there? Most of what I read about are weekly rentals. I did read about friday harbor village apts but not too much more.

thanks
Linda

I'm pretty sure you can drive a giant UHaul on the ferry. I've seen some pretty bg RVs on there.

The ferries are built to take trucks. Not semis, but normal commercial trucks. Here is the Washington State Ferry system home page, from which you can find the info or a phone number to call when you know the dimensions of your choices of trucks:
Official Washington State Ferries Homepage

For rentals on San Juan Island, I Googled for the newspaper and got
San Juan Islander - Daily news and information about San Juan Island, Friday Harbor, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw Islands
You might also want to check craigslist, rent.com, forrent.com, apartments.com

I live on Lummi Island in the Sound ... little place ... little ferry only fits up to about 22 cars. But we put multiple cement mixer trucks and even semi's on board on a regular basis ... progress, you know, knows no limitations.

Your issue won't be getting your stuff out onto the islands. Even islands without ferries have barge service. Your issue, coming from the east coast (I grew up in Philadelphia) is whether the isolation in the gloomy 6 months of the year will have you, personally, jumping OFF the ferry wearing a lead belt to escape the depression. BUT, the lifestyle DOES suit some of us

lol. thanks. If I do make it there, I'm pretty sure I'd get rid of my stuff. I'm not driving like 3,000 miles with a `13yr old just to keep my furniture.Although I would like to keep my car, but it being 12 yrs old and having problems it'd have to be towed behind a truck, so I'd have to start from scratch. Grey skies don't bother me. It's so hot here I dont go out till later in the afternoon anyway. not a sun worshiper.

Then one of the things you'll LOVE about out here is the absence of mugginess, that sticky heat that attacks every pore of your skin. Absent here. YAY!!
Have fun packing!
