Hood Canal
My husband and I are checking out the Hood Canal area for retirement.
Any comments about Hoodsport or the other nearby towns would be appreciated.Local issues, shopping, farmers markets, weather?
Thanks.

I like Hood Canal.
Expect it to be rainy, though. And it tends to get more snow than other parts of sea-level Western Washington.

Rural
It's certainly a beautiful area, as so much of the region is. My impression was that Hoodsport, WA acts as the US 101 gateway to Lake Cushman. Thus related activity that you may or not welcome. Some place such as Liliwaup, WA, a bit further north, would be quieter. If near US 101 you can of course expect the associated traffic and noise.
There are obviously a lot of options along the Hood Canal, on either side, and proximity to services may be one consideration. A town such as Poulsbo, WA would have much readier access to major services, as well as being fairly close to the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park. If the Park is one of your interests you might consider which area of it you prefer, as it exists as a large island with many single points of entry, of variable ease in access, but no through roads.
As far as I know weather along the Hood Canal will be standard western Washington wet and grey in the winter, lots of sun come summer.
Beautiful area, but largely rural and isolated.

Thank you both for your reply.I know there is a lot to consider, will have to go up and revisit it. I hadn't thought of snow.

Be advised that you will be far away from any kind of major shopping. There is only a tiny store nearby. For anything else, you would have to drive into Belfair to get anything close to a Safeway. Same thing for fast food, malls, etc. Also, if you are considering retirement, you are far away from a hospital. Things to consider. When looking at rural areas, remember, too, that you probably won't have cable internet (and satellite systems die when it rains, ahem). Also most rural locations have septic tanks, not sewer, and wells, not public water.
