A proposal to increase speed limits on I-90 and I-82 in eastern Washington was vetoed by our governor/presidential candidate last year. But my experience on these freeways is most are going 75 to 80 anyway with little enforcement. I think the better answer is to increase the limits to just gain a certain predictability. Idaho has 80 mph and they have not seen any meaningful change in accident rates.

Increase the speed to 80 and I will still drive 70. My senses are attuned to 70.
My best speed is what the traffic demands for speed.

Europe has higher speed limits and fewer accidents. I wonder why.

It makes no difference what they set the limit at, traffic will always go 5-10 over.

In general, accidents are not significantly increased by increasing rate of speed, as shown in Germany and other places in Europe.

Accidents are mostly caused by poor road conditions (i.e. snow or a deer in the road), distracted driving, and disruptions in the flow of traffic (i.e. people who drive significantly faster or slower than everybody else).

Because it's much harder to obtain a driver's license in countries such as Germany. It costs thousands of dollars for a license, plus there are certain instructional requirements (as in a minimum number of training hours) to be met. Barely half the population is licensed to drive. Tack on more expensive fuel, and infrastructure better-suited for public transportation, so there isn't nearly as much incentive to own a POV.

Cars of today are much safer at speed than cars were 20 - 40 years ago when the limits were put in place.

This is probably very true.
