Default Moving here? Don't forget how far north we are...

I see a lot of posts by people asking about the rain/snow. However, I don't see many people talking about how far North we are, and the fact that we hardly see the sun during the late fall and winter months if you work a typical daytime job. Right now, and it's only mid-September, the sun is just starting to come up over the hills at 6:30am. In just a month, it will be dark when I get up, and dark when I drive home from work again.

So, take the rain/snow into consideration...but don't forget about the dark. A lot of people get SAD (seasonal affective disorder) in the winter months in northern states because of this.

It's true. In Seattle, I got up in dark drizzle. I waded to work in darkness. Sunup, such as it was, was something I saw from skyscraper windows. I went home in a dark drizzle. Daylight was something that happened to me only on my lunch hour.

On December 22 in western Washington, sunrise is 8:00AM and sunset is 4:00PM.
In Fairbanks, however, sunrise is 11:00 and sunset is 2:00. Everything is relative.

But this isn't the Fairbanks, Alaska section, is it?

What about the summer when the sun comes up at 4:45am and doesn't set til 10:15? I know SAD is real, but boy do the summers FAR outweigh the winters for me! I can't imagine a better place to live.

Just because it's worse somewhere else doesn't mean it's great here.

Where is that, because that isn't Seattle. At the Summer Solstice in Seattle (say that 3 times fast) the sun rises at 5:11 am and sets at 9:10 pm

Haakon, do you live here or just look at internet numbers? That sounds much ruder than how I mean it to sound. I only ask because all summer long I'm outside working til just shy of 10pm. Maybe the sun has technically set, but it's still light out. My neighbor mows his lawn at 10pm in the summer.
I take my dog running, and we leave at 5 am and again, maybe the sun hasn't technically risen, but it's plenty light out.

Yes, mthomson, and for about 2 months on summer mornings the birds start talking loudly just after 4:00AM, so it's light enough for them to fly. I know because they wake my cats up who wake me up!
