distance from Olympia to......
if one were to get a job in Olympia; which areas are close enough to live and still work in Olympia? I ask in case a rental house can't be found IN Olympia? I'm confused as to the distance between cities.
For those in the know: in what city would you recommend renting?
Thanks!

There are a ton of places within about 35 minutes of Olympia. Right near by are Tumwater and Lacey. Further out places include Nisqually, Little Rock, Tenino, Yelm, Rainier, Roy, DuPont, Tillicum, Lakewood, Tacoma, Steilacoom, and Centralia.
Oly is about 63 miles from Seattle, 25? to Centralia, about 30 from Tacoma and Steilacoom ...

There are plenty of rental houses close in to Olympia; I recommend trying to be in the city as the schools seem to be pretty strong and it's a nice community. But you could also rent in Tumwater or Lacey (Tumwater has its own school district, Lacey is part of North Thurston). Of course, that assumes that you care about schools... if you don't have kids, I guess I still think Olympia is a good choice (why commute if you don't have to?). As for other communities, it depends a little on what you like--do you want to be out in the country? Within striking distance of Tacoma/Seattle?
Good luck--I should think that in the current market you'd be able to find a place...

thanks so much. And no, schools are not an issue. I want to live nearby shopping, bowling lanes, movie theaters, etc. It confuses me when I look at maps and the like because Olympia looks so near to Tacoma; therefore when looking into a rental home I didn't know what area to pinpoint. Yea, the closer to work the better so if we can find something IN Olympia that would be great.
But for shopping and such are the other cities within like at least a half hour drive?

Tumwater and Lacey are a five-ten minute drive...But Olympia has plenty of shopping, movies, bowling. Tacoma's a lot larger of a city, and has some great neighborhoods ( and some really bad ones) and is around a half hour away.
I've lived in Olympia. It's a nice place.

In the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater area (it's all sort of the same area) you will find the Olympia Mall, bowling, movies, a couple of Costco's, Target, Kohl's, Sears, and lots of more eclectic shopping in downtown Olympia (little boutiquey type places). Olympia has a nice waterfront with a great farmers' market, good parks, basically everything you might need unless you are looking for a more cosmopolitan urban experience. You will NOT find high-end retail--for that you have to go at least as far as the Tacoma Mall (a new Nordstrom's just opened up there, though I haven't seen it), maybe even as far as up near the airport. I haven't been that impressed with Tacoma, though it's nice as an occasional change of scenery (however, I'm new to the area so maybe just haven't given it a fair shake). As a commute (to Olympia) I think it would be kind of difficult (by the time you get on and off the highways, maybe more like 45 minutes). Not huge, but why do it given that Olympia has great amenities? My husband commutes Oly to Ft. Lewis and it is just shy of 1/2 hour with no traffic.

Why would anyone want to live in such a lame city as Olympia? The downtown is run down, full of homeless and tattoo shops. Some good dining. Shopping stinks!! Mall is lame. Tacoma mall is a bit better. Best shopping, dining, entertaiment is Bellevue which is an hour N of Olympia. The drive is worth it.
