Ugh! I'm sorry, but I spent my high school years in Spanaway - and I hated it. It is rural in some aspect and suburban in others, which means the county government hasn't planned the census designated place very well.
I felt more out of place there than in other areas I've lived in. Spanaway is filled with people who fit a stereotype, which left me on my own.
It's difficult to get around unless you drive. There are only sidewalks in developed or planned areas. Biking and walking are dangerous.
Although it is up to the kids to achieve what they want, school districts make possibilities happen and the Bethel School District doesn't make possibilities happen. The BSD wastes it's money and because of that, bonds and levies rarely pass. When I went to school there, wasting paper was a huge issue. What school district can't afford paper? This is something to consider if you have kids.
There is a lot of petty crime, such as bikes being stolen or vandalism.
Spanaway is not clean; there is so much litter on the shoulders of major roads. Speaking of roads, because the area is not planned, driving to somewhere can take forever because you have to go several miles in one direction in order to use a cross-street and traffic itself is horrible.
Driving to some of the money low-wealth areas in Spanaway makes you aware of these residents' attitudes towards taking care of their home and property.
Overall, you should seriously reconsider Spanaway, along with it's neighboring areas, including: Roy, Graham, Parkland, Summit, and McKenna. Yelm and South Hill are your best bets in Pierce County.
