Lakewood
What is Lakewood like? If one were to work in Lakewood, where would be good places to live or rent in the surrounding area. How are the schools? Is it a high crime area?
Thanks!!

I've read some of the posts on Lakewood, and it doesn't sound like it would be safe/family-friendly overall.
What are the best cities for a young family that are safe and affordable within a 30-60 minute commute of Lakewood (including traffic)?
Thanks!

Lakewood is a great place to live
There are some poor neighborhoods but overall it is very safe. Since it became a city and the plice have very little tolerance on crime it is safer than most the areas around here.

an awful lot of those "cops" shows are done in pierce county, and alot of those are in/around lakewood. years ago, about 1983 or so, there was an influx of gang activity around gravelly lakes. seems mainly asian gangs. anyway, i rented my house to a family who as it turned out, were gang members, so maybe i'm too close to it. but i would say crime has become more and more prevalent the last 20 years. you could say that about most places.

I wouldn't move to Lakewood. Especially if you don't know the area. Everytime I have been there it looks run down wherever I am.
What is your budget? That will determince where you will look.

Lakewood is definitely a mixed bag...The area around Lakewold Gardens is very nice and perfectly nice, and the area bordering Steilacoom is nice too, but the part closest to Fort Lewis is a bit "scuzzy".
Like a lot of places, there's going to be some variability in housing, types of people, etc...
One wouldn't avoid Kirkland because of it's bad parts ( and it does have them), neither should one avoid Lakewood because of it's bad parts. It's probably best to go there and hang out both during the day and during darkness to get a good feel for the place.

Lakewood is a mixed bag. The "rich" areas get the good service. The regular neighborhoods get nothing.
The police are tough on crime? You've got to be kidding! My neighbors and I have reported drug dealing in the middle of the street and the dispatcher tells us the police need a warrant to come out and investigate. UNBELIEVABLE. Right out of the wild west.
I'd look to University Place, Bonney Lake, or Sumner. I hear the residential area of Fife is really nice, too.
