Talking FT. Lewis

Hello,

I will be moving to Ft. Lewis from Ft. Drum next spring. During my career I have only been allowed to live in a military barracks. I hear that Lewis allows SGT/E-5's housing allowances to get out of the dreaded barracks life. So what I am asking is whats available for a single male Soldier in the Lewis area and hows the commutes and cost of apartments in these areas. Is there much to do as far as entertainment? Im not much into the night life and partying seen as much as outdoors and beaches are the preferred past times. Thank You for any info you can send

grnsldr,

Any snow yet at Ft. Drum?
You'll find the PNW weather a lot milder, beautiful summers, just a little bit of snow in the winter and of course rain.

As far as I know, NCOs can live off post. If the nightlife is not so important to you, you might want to get an apartment close to post, to save on commute time and $$$. I'd recommend Dupont or Lacey. You should be able to get a nice 2 bedroom apartment for under $1000 dollars. Check the AHRN website and Craigslist. The drive to Mt. Rainier from Dupont or Lacey is just over an hour and the drive to the ocean beaches is a little over 90 minutes. If you enjoy swimming or boating, you can do that right on North Ft. Lewis, at American Lake.

Good Luck!

Sandy

thanks for the info. I made a few calls to Ft. Lewis and found that its up to the E-5's chain of command to allow us to live off post and receive a housing allowance. As far as snow in Ft. Drum I really dont know Im still in Kuwait waiting to come home after a year long tour. I still have a couple months to go here. Thanks again
