Amandine,

Olympia is generally hailed as a very diverse city culturally, life-style and economically.

When in Gig Harbor check out the Tides Tavern. It used to called "Three finger jacks" back in the day.
I installed a few pilings under that place many years back to replace some that were rotten. It was quite a chore but I made $90. per hour on that little job.

Default Gig harbor and work commute

I think the key to your post is the working at home option. If you are doing alot of airport trips and bellevue visits that can be pretty taxing from Gig Harbor. We love Gig and hope to move there someday but have evaluated the commute. If you go to the places you mention during non commuter hours its do-able. If you get caught coming back during commuter hours it could be a nightmare. Have you looked at the outskirts of Issaquah or North Bend like snoqualmie ridge. Very close to outdoors and much easier to get to Bellevue.

What parts of Gig harbor (neighborhoods/schools) are recommended? I have a small child and want to put her in the best school possible, as well as live in a safe neighborhood.

Really, there aren't any areas I'd consider bad. The entire Pensinsula School District is very highly rated. You can search anything (http://gigharborundressed.neighborhoodsundressed.com/ - broken link)in the 98332 or 98335 zip codes and be confident that the neighborhood and schools will be safe and good.
