Pullman For Families
Good day,
I graduated from Central Washington in Ellensburg a couple years ago, and I am ready to get back to Grad School and back to the Inland NW. This has led me to Missoula, Moscow ID & Pullman as my best options to get the ultimate degree. Whenver I mention Pullman I get responses ranging from Party Town to nice community. Now, I understand that partying is a part of any college-town atmosphere. As I stated I recently lived in E-burg, presently live in Flagstaff, AZ, and have lived in a few other college towns in the west. But seriously, is Pullman a good town for raising kids and having a family? Would Moscow be the better option, or would commuting in from Albion or Colfax? Any help ould be appreciated, tahnks
Billy

Most of the partying happens on College Hill, it isn't all over town. I don't have kids but I hear its a great place for families. I prefer Moscow over Pullman, Moscow has more of it's own life outside of the University and a great little downtown. Either one isn't really a bad place to be while in school.

I think any of the towns you mentioned would be a great place for a family.
Pullman is very family friendly. Good schools, safe, etc. WSU also has on campus apartments for families that are very affordable. In my opinion, Pullman less of a party town than Ellensburg. Moscow and Pullman are only about 8 miles away from each other, so you could always commute from one town to the other as well.

College Hill in Pullman is "Party Central" for way too many nights a year. Not a place I'd recommend anyone live. HOWEVER ... the rest of town is OK! The schools are good, the best for some distance around (and the difference in quality is substantial). Used to be that real estate prices there were inexplicably high, but I left Pullman in 2001 and have not followed what's gone on since then so that could be quite different now. To us, the schools led us to live in Pullman rather than anywhere else in the area. We were on the northwest edge of town, on Military Hill not far from the high school, and that was perfectly nice little neighborhood. Pullman is small enough that the walk from the house to my office was about 40 minutes, up and down some pretty steep slopes ... good for me, but tiring.
Pullman is, however, a one-dimensional town; there's very little underlying "town" other than the University. Moscow is more of a community in that sense. The two are no more than ten miles apart, so it's quite possible to dwell in one while working, recreating, or socializing in the other.

I also prefer Moscow as far as a 'family' town with more going on & less emphasis on the U.
There are some nice little towns too, but the commute would get old for 'events', As a Grad student you might find it better to stick close by (Moscow or Pullman). It might be great to have the kids and family as close as possible for those 'quicktrips' home
