Job switch from Shelton's prison to one of those around Canon City, I presume? There's only one reason I know of to relocate to CC, unless one has a major love of the Royal Gorge: pen work. They have a pretty cool prison museum at the old TCF in CC, you should stop by.
Least hazardous would probably be Portland-Pendleton-Ontario-Boise-Brigham City-Provo-Grand Junction-Denver-CO Springs-Canon City. There are a couple spots there where you might trim an hour or two away depending on the weather. The I-80 and I-90 routes, being more northerly, will probably have worse weather. Plus, this one is heavily traveled and will tend to be kept clear.
Main thing is just be smart, keep awareness of the environment, and above all, if you're going down a slope on 70 in Colorado and you see a semi in your rear view mirror barreling down at 90 and accelerating, remember he's not just being a bully. He's lost his brakes; he can't stop. Just clear the track and wait for him to use one of those runaway truck ramps. Be careful of bridges, which may be icy even when other parts of the road are not.
